Once a centre of the opium trade, it’s now a peaceful, panoramic location filled with cultural intrigue.

The Mekong River flows beside us, offering sweeping views into 3 countries. Our day ends in Chiang Khong, a tranquil town nestled along the river. Here, the pace softens. We relax, share stories over dinner and let the hum of the day’s ride settle. The Mekong murmurs in the background, a perfect soundtrack as we ease into our first night on the road.

Once in Laos, the scenery changes subtly to untouched hills, distant peaks and calm, winding roads welcome us. By late afternoon, we arrive in Luang Namtha, a peaceful town surrounded by national parks and serene countryside. The pace is slower here, perfect for wandering local markets or simply soaking in the quiet. As the sun dips low, we find ourselves fully immersed in the rhythm of the road and the spirit of a new country.

Day 3 – Luang Namtha to Dien Bien Phu (380 km)

It’s a long but unforgettable ride today as we leave Luang Namtha and cross into Vietnam. The road takes us deep into northern Laos, through mountain passes and vibrant villages untouched by time. We pass through Oudomxay, catching glimpses of authentic local life along the way. The journey is scenic and meditative, with each turn revealing a new stretch of wilderness. Crossing the Pang Hok border into Vietnam is smooth, and soon we’re welcomed by cooler air and winding roads through dense, green forests. The road climbs steadily today as we head toward Sapa, a jewel in Vietnam’s highlands. Leaving Dien Bien Phu, the landscape quickly transforms into misty valleys and terraced hillsides. With every kilometer, the views become more spectacular, green rice paddies cascading down mountainsides, villages perched on hills, and clouds brushing the peaks above.

Towering limestone formations emerge, signaling our arrival in what’s often called “Inland Halong Bay.” Ninh Binh is postcard perfect.

We spend the afternoon drifting along the waterways of Tam Coc or Trang An, gliding past cave entrances and karst peaks. A visit to Bich Dong Pagoda offers stunning views and quiet reflection. As the day closes, the golden hour light casts a warm glow on the rice fields. It’s a gentle, grounding day, proof that sometimes, the shortest rides make the biggest impact.

Day 8 – Ninh Binh to Con Cuong (260 km)

Today’s ride is all about the joy of the open road and we leave the dramatic cliffs of Ninh Binh and ride deep into central Vietnam, covering 260 kilometres through a mix of farmland, forest and riverside villages. The scenery is constantly shifting from lush valleys, dense trees and occasional glimpses of remote hamlets. It’s a quieter stretch of road, where the rhythm of riding becomes meditative and nature takes center stage.

Nearing Con Cuong, the Annamite Range appears in soft, rolling waves. If time allows, a visit to nearby Khe Kem Waterfall offers a refreshing break. Pu Mat National Park, rich in wildlife and natural beauty, is also close by. Con Cuong feels off the beaten path, in the best way. Here Vietnam reveals a slower, wilder side, perfect for reconnecting with the land and the ride itself.

After a smooth border crossing, we’re back in Laos, welcomed by its laid-back atmosphere and sweeping plateaus. The terrain becomes gentler, dotted with grazing cattle and wooden homes. Phonsavan soon appears on the horizon, surrounded by landscapes steeped in mystery. It’s home to the Plain of Jars, one of Southeast Asia’s most enigmatic archaeological sites. Arriving in Vientiane, we’re welcomed by tree lined streets, colonial buildings and golden spired temples. There’s time to explore landmarks like the Patuxai Monument and Wat Sisaket, or simply wander the calm streets near the Mekong River.

The vibe here is laid back yet cultured, perfect for easing into the final days of the tour. A sunset stroll along the river or a browse through local markets adds to the experience.
